the state of our garden: week 000

2 It has been nearly a month since I last updated on the state of our garden. I didn’t have too much to report. Ryan was waiting on the last spell of cold weather to move out of here and until we would return from a week-long trip out of town. Over the weekend, Ryan and Thomas got our plants from Lowe’s and got the soil fully prepared with extra nutrients (including an organic manure mix). photo 1 Later in the week, Ryan and I went back to Lowe’s to buy another flat of plants once Ryan realized we had the room for some extras. Let me be clear…I have done almost nothing toward this garden besides document the process. My part/work comes when the harvest is in. =) photo 2

It has been so long since we have had a garden, I think we are all just so excited about living in the South again and enjoying the bounty. photo 3

I’m calling this Week Zero (000) and will likely update weekly or every other week when there’s something to report. Here is what went into the ground: Tomato Plants:

  • Mountain Pride (2)
  • Better Boy
  • Big Beef
  • German Queen
  • Cherokee Purple (2)
  • Indigo Rose

Pepper Plants:

  • Big Bertha Bell
  • Pimento Sweet
  • Poblano
  • Cajun Belle Spicy
  • Mexibelle

Herbs:

  • Cilantro (2)
  • Purple Basil
  • Pineapple Sage
  • Rosemary
  • Dill
  • Bee Balm
  • Sweet Basil

Miscellaneous:

  • Heirloom Leeks
  • Yellow Onions
  • Pickling Cucumbers
  • Straight Neck Yellow Squash
  • Zucchini Squash

Plus we have our Pear Trees and Apple Tree making fruit. I have a feeling we will be eating an abundance of fresh vegetables this summer and I’ll be canning and freezing a lot. We have all we need to make jellies, pickles, salsa and marinara sauce. Woo-Wee! I’m getting hungry just thinking about all of that.
